Special Considerations/Possible Adverse Effects with Excess Intake
Diabetics should consult a physician prior to taking ginseng as it may reduce blood glucose levels.
Individuals with hypertension need to check with their physician prior to taking ginseng, because of the potential of some ginseng preparations to increase blood pressure.
An interaction between ginseng and phenelizine, a monoamine oxidase inhibitor indicated for depression, could occur, although the clinical significance of this interaction has not been evaluated.
Excessive quantities (e.g. 3-15 g) have been associated with hypertension, dizziness, nervousness, irritability, diarrhea, skin eruptions and insomnia.
As with any supplement, if you are taking a prescription product, are pregnant or breastfeeding, consult with your physician before taking ginseng.
